The most common cause of emotional eating is stress.  Have you ever noticed that ‘stress’ makes you hungry?  This is not just in your mind.  When your stress is chronic, and especially if it is constant, this leads to high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone that triggers the survival mechanism of “Fight, Flight, Freeze”.  When cortisol is released to also triggers the  cravings for salty, sweet and high fat foods.  These are foods that also give you a burst of energy and, at the same time, a sense of pleasure, due to the association of ‘sweet’ and rewards.  The more stress in your life, the greater the likelihood that you will use food as ‘band-aid’ for emotional relief.

Eating is often a way of ‘stuffing down’ emotions in our body.  You may be eating to ‘fill’ the gaps or emptiness you feel inside.  It may be to numb yourself to the situations around you.  You may have bullying or abuse that you can’t cope with and so food distracts from the ‘hurt’ surrounding you.  But often, it is simply a feeling of un-fulfillment, something or some-one is missing and emotionally you aren’t coping.

Childhood memories also are the basis of some of our eating habits.  Were you give a cookie or a treat when you felt sad, mad, glad, when you were hurt or left behind?  All of these ‘habits’  carry into our adult life, even when we know better.

Add to this, emotional events that happen and we ‘can’t deal’ with them at the time.  These may be dreadful events or simply events that our mind and body has perceived as ‘dreadful’ or ‘un-comprehensible’ at the time.
